The Church Door Passport
A plaque on the church door. Scan it, give £5 straight to that church, and your passport gets a stamp to show you reached the door. The stamps connect the Point-to-Point walks and the GHCT tour.
Prepared as a preview for Professor Patricia Broadfoot CBE, Chair, Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust. Not endorsed by GHCT. No money can move until a lawyer has signed off.
How it works
01
The plaque
An A5 plaque by the door with a QR code. Each code opens that church's own door page.
02
The door page
The church's photo, credited, a sourced fact, and the GHCT grant line where GHCT lists one.
03
The gift
£5 to the church's own giving account, through a regulated platform that claims Gift Aid. Money never passes through Every Church or George.
04
The stamp
Kept in the walker's own browser. No account. An optional location check compares the phone with the church point on the phone itself.
05
The routes
Stamps link to the GHCT tour of 130 grant churches and to the Point-to-Point footpath walks.
06
Clubs
Badges and club leaderboards for orienteering and walking groups. The leaderboard shown is example layout with no data.
The 130 doors are the churches named on GHCT's published grants list (Dec 2018 to June 2026) that we matched to a church on our map. GHCT, Previous awards
What reaches the church from £5
Fees are each platform's published rate, applied to one £5 gift. Gift Aid adds 25p for every £1 given by an eligible UK taxpayer, so £1.25 on £5. GOV.UK, Gift Aid (25p for every £1) Platforms may add their own terms; these are not quotes.

| Give A LittleDiocese of York, How do we give? (Give A Little: 1.1%) | 1.1% (as reported by the Diocese of York) | 5.5p | £4.95 | £6.20 |

- Parish Giving Scheme: the fee comes off the gift; PGS claims Gift Aid and passes all of it on. Parish Giving Scheme parish terms, v3 Oct 2025 (Diocese of Portsmouth copy) PGS is for Church of England parishes; other denominations on the GHCT list would need another platform.
- Stripe direct does not claim Gift Aid itself; the church or its software would make the claim.
- Amounts in pence are rounded to the nearest penny in the table. The Gift Aid column assumes the giver ticks Gift Aid and is eligible.
Questions for a lawyer
- Is the stamp a benefit? HMRC allows a benefit of up to 25% of a gift up to £100 (so £1.25 on £5), and says a simple thank-you plaque is not a benefit. GOV.UK, Gift Aid donation claims: the benefit rule If a stamp, badge or leaderboard place has a value, the safer design may be: the stamp is free for everyone who reaches the door, and the gift is optional.
- Who is the charity? Each gift should go to that church's own charity (for an Anglican church, its PCC). Who signs up each church, and who confirms the giving link belongs to it?
- Data protection. Today nothing leaves the phone. Club leaderboards would need names, clubs and stamp counts on a server: lawful basis, consent wording, retention, children in clubs, and registration with the ICO.
- Location. If location is used to confirm a stamp, is it processed only on the phone, and how is that explained?
- Platform choice. Parish Giving Scheme, Give A Little, or Stripe through a charity platform: Gift Aid handling, refunds, and whether a platform allows a gift to trigger a stamp.
- Use of names. GHCT's name and grant list appear with a source line. Does GHCT want to be named on plaques, and on what terms?
- Plaques on buildings. Fixing anything to a listed church, or in a churchyard, may need permission from the church and its diocese (for Anglican churches, the faculty system).
What is real and what is not
- Real: the church list (from GHCT), photos with licences, sourced facts, the map and walks.
- Demo: the payment sheet. It takes no card details and moves no money.
- Demo: stamps live only in this browser. Leaderboards are layout with no data.
- Not built: server-side proof of a gift, club accounts, anti-cheat codes.
